Leeds Winter Coat Appeal

The Leeds Winter Coat Appeal aims to collect and redistribute great quality, second-hand winter coats to people across Leeds for free, helping to save money and reduce waste.

What we’re doing

We’ve set up Leeds Winter Coat Appeal to make it easy for people across Leeds to donate, share and collect good quality second hand winter coats. The appeal is held annually and launches in October and continues until the end of January – with all coats being distributed to local families by the end of February each year.

Last year’s Appeal (2024/25) was a huge success thanks to the many businesses, individuals and community groups that got involved donating and distributing coats. We were able to give out over 8,900 items of winter clothing to families for free.

Why we’re doing it

The cost of living crisis hit families hard and priorities had to change. Paying bills or buying food became more important than buying a new winter coat. Sharing thousands of donated, good quality winter coats across the city meant we could help ease the financial pressure. Freeing up unworn coats from the back of wardrobes and passing them on is also so much more sustainable than buying new – and people were more than happy to help.

Support our work

Last year 34 local businesses supported us and we’d love more businesses to get involved this year. Could you support us by asking your staff to pass on the coats they no longer want or need. We also have volunteering opportunities to sort through the donations. If you’d like to support our work or collaborate with us, please get in touch by emailing (need to update with new email) info@zerowasteleeds.org.uk.
